NEW ENGLAND'S GIGABIT CITY - BTV Ignite is the name of the Burlington-US Ignite partnership. BTV Ignite encourages public, private and academic institutions to develop next generation internet applications right here in Burlington. BTV Ignite is dedicated to aligning Burlington’s powerful gigabit infrastructure as a tool, testbed and accelerator for economic, educational and community benefit.
Mayor Miro Weinberger formed a broad-based Mayor’s Advisory Council in August of 2013 to determine how to begin to harness the power of the city’s gigabit network by connecting key institutions and creating next-generation applications. The Council included high-tech business leaders, educators, representatives from Burlington Tel, the city-owned fiber provider, members of the local Code for America brigade, and key leaders from Champlain College and the University of Vermont. Based on the council’s recommendations, the mayor launched “BTV Ignite” in October 2013, including four components: Enhancing community infrastructure by bringing Gig connections to schools, libraries, museums, maker spaces, and research universities; stimulating a constant stream of application development events where entrepreneurs can innovate; committing to sharing best practices and applications with other US Ignite cities; and establishing an economic development accelerator group under the leadership of the city’s Community and Economic Development Office led by Nathan Wildfire to complete a Playbook and guide implementation of the BTV Ignite plan.
